Damp and mould can cause serious problems in your home, affecting both your health and the condition of your property. Here is how to understand and prevent it.

What is damp and mould?

  • Damp is when excess moisture builds up in your home. It can come from leaks, condensation, or rising damp from the ground.  
  • Mould is a type of fungus that grows in damp conditions. It appears as black, white, or green patches and can produce a musty smell.  

Why is damp and mould dangerous?

Damp and mould can lead to:  

  • respiratory problems, allergies, and asthma  
  • damage to walls, ceilings, and floors  
  • unpleasant smells and unsightly stains  

How to prevent damp and mould

  • Ventilate your home: Open windows regularly and use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms to reduce condensation  
  • Heat your home: Keep your home warm to reduce moisture in the air. Use a consistent heating schedule  
  • Use dehumidifiers: These devices help to reduce moisture levels in the air  
  • Drying clothes outside: If possible, dry clothes outside to prevent moisture build-up indoors  
  • Drying clothes inside: If drying inside, use a ventilated space or use dehumidifiers. Ensure you always open trickle vents (the small vents on windows and doors)  
  • Fix leaks promptly: Report any leaks in roofs, windows, and pipes to us to prevent water from entering your home  
  • Insulate your home: Proper insulation helps to prevent condensation on walls and ceilings  

What to do if you have damp and mould

  • Find out where the moisture is coming from, if you cannot find or fix the issue yourself then report it using Haringey's repairs form
  • Use a mould removal spray or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean small areas of mould. Wear protective gloves and a mask.
